A group gift that is a book: collect the photos in secret

Send one link to friends and family. Everyone uploads photos from their phone browser, with no app and no account, and only you can see what comes in. Heysnaps lays the photos out as an 8 × 11 inch hardcover photo book. You adjust what you like, order it, and hand over a book on the day. The album costs from $39, the book $79.

Who this is for

A 60th birthday, a golden anniversary, a retirement, a teacher or coach who is leaving, a friend who is moving away. The moments where a group wants to give something that is about the person, and where the best photos are scattered across thirty phones and a few shoeboxes.

The people who contribute do not have to design anything. They upload. That is the difference from photo book tools that ask every contributor to build pages.

How a collection works

Set up the album and enter the date of the celebration. Add a few photo prompts. Send the link by text, email, or group chat to everyone who is in on it. People open it in the browser and upload, from anywhere in the country.

When enough photos are in, open the book draft. Heysnaps has already picked the strongest shots, dropped near-duplicates, and arranged the pages. Change the cover, move photos, edit captions, then order.

Photo prompts that bring in the good pictures

“Send something” gets you ten photos. A specific request gets you a hundred, and the ones that tell a story. Six prompts you can copy: An old photo of her, the older the better. A photo of you and him together. Your message, written on a sheet of paper and photographed. A candid shot she would never hand over herself. The place where you met. The one picture from that trip you all still talk about.

Keeping the surprise

Switch the guest gallery off. Then only you see the collection, and someone who forwards the link reveals nothing. Contributors have no account, so there are no notifications that could reach the wrong person. Anyone who wants to can add their name to an upload.

Timing and what it costs

Start four to eight weeks ahead. Most photos arrive in the first days after you ask and again just before your deadline, so plan one reminder to the group about three weeks out and a last call a week before you order.

Order the book at least two weeks before the day, to leave room for printing and shipping. Books for US addresses are printed in the United States. The book needs at least 30 photos. It costs $79 with 40 pages, and $2 for each additional page. The album itself is a one-time price from $39, with no subscription.

Questions

How do I collect photos for a gift without the person finding out?
Set up an album, add a few photo prompts, and send the link only to the people who are in on it. Everyone uploads in the browser with no app and no account. Switch the guest gallery off so that nobody but you can see the collection, even if the link gets forwarded.
Do contributors have to design pages or install anything?
No. They open the link, choose photos, and upload. The layout is done for you, and you decide what goes in the book.
When do I have to order the book so it arrives in time?
Order at least two weeks before the celebration. That leaves room for printing and shipping within the United States. If you are short on time, order earlier with the photos you have: the collection stays open and late photos can still be viewed and downloaded.
What if only a few people send photos?
The book needs at least 30 photos. Specific prompts help most, followed by one personal reminder to the group. Old prints count too: people can photograph them with their phone and upload the picture.
Who can see the photos?
Only people who have your album link or QR code. Albums are not listed publicly and are not indexed by search engines. As the host you can remove any photo, and you decide whether guests can browse the gallery or only upload.
